Centrifugal Compressor NX5000 by Ingersoll Rand

Centrifugal Compressor NX5000 is the Ingersoll Rand
MSG® TURBO-AIR® NX5000 centrifugal air compressor platform for demanding
industrial compressed-air applications. The compressor uses an integrally geared,
multi-stage centrifugal design and is supplied as a packaged system to simplify
installation, operation and maintenance.

The NX5000 package can include the MXS centrifugal compressor controller, inlet-air
filtration, lubrication system, intercooling and aftercooling, discharge check valve,
high-efficiency electric motor and project-specific instrumentation. Final performance,
motor selection and scope of supply are engineered against the customer duty point,
ambient conditions, cooling-water conditions and electrical requirements.

Why choose the Centrifugal Compressor NX5000?

  • Oil-free compression: labyrinth air and oil seal arrangements help
prevent lubricant from entering the compressed-air stream.
  • High aerodynamic efficiency: optimized inlets, impellers, diffusers
and scroll geometry support efficient pressure conversion.
  • Integrally geared architecture: each rotor can operate at the speed
required for its stage, supporting optimized flow and efficiency.
  • AGMA 13 gearing: high-speed precision-ground single-helical gearing
is designed for long service life and low mechanical losses.
  • Variable inlet guide vanes: inlet guide vane control improves
part-load operation and supports energy savings during turndown.
  • MXS control: touchscreen operation, Modbus communication, remote
access, sequencing capability, data logging and real-time diagnostics.
  • Industry 4.0 readiness: HELIX™ IoT connectivity can support remote
analytics, alarms and maintenance planning where enabled.
  • Serviceable cooling system: removable straight-tube cooler bundles
are designed for inspection and cleaning.

NX5000 technical design

Compressor case and aerodynamic path

The NX5000 uses a single-piece compressor casing that incorporates air passages and
cooler interfaces. The inlet nozzle, diffuser sections and discharge scroll are designed
to convert velocity into static pressure efficiently. The aerodynamic passages are
optimized using computational fluid dynamics.

Rotors, impellers and bearings

The multi-stage arrangement uses dynamically balanced rotors and open-inducer
impellers. Rotor shafts are supported by engineered journal-bearing systems, while thrust
loads are controlled by dedicated thrust-bearing arrangements. The split bearing design
supports inspection and maintenance access.

Labyrinth sealing and oil-free air

Air and oil labyrinth seals operate without a seal-gas system in the standard
compressor design. An atmospheric space separates the air and oil seal areas, reducing
the risk of lubricant contamination of the compressed-air path.

Cooling and lubrication

Water-cooled intercooler and aftercooler bundles remove interstage heat and improve
overall compressor efficiency. The forced-feed lubrication system includes a main oil
pump, auxiliary electric oil pump, oil cooler, temperature regulation, pressure and
temperature protection, duplex filtration and an oil reservoir.

MXS controller and remote monitoring

The Ingersoll Rand MXS controller provides a 10.1-inch color touchscreen and supports
Ethernet, USB and RS485 communication. Standard communication includes MODBUS TCP/IP and
RTU. Depending on selected options, the controller can support compressor sequencing,
remote control logic, historical data logging, configuration management and integration
with legacy compressor control systems.

For connected installations, HELIX™ infrastructure can provide remote access to
operating information and support condition-based service planning. Connectivity and
cloud functionality should be confirmed for the final project configuration.

Applications

The Centrifugal Compressor NX5000 is suitable for large industrial compressed-air
systems where reliability, oil-free air and lifecycle efficiency are important. Typical
projects can include oil and gas facilities, petrochemical plants, manufacturing,
utilities, process industries, power generation and other continuous-duty installations.
Final suitability must be confirmed from the required pressure, flow, air quality,
ambient conditions, turndown profile and site utilities.

Centrifugal Compressor NX5000 FAQ

Is the Ingersoll Rand NX5000 an oil-free compressor?

Yes. The NX5000 centrifugal compressor uses separate air and oil labyrinth sealing
arrangements designed to prevent lubricant from contaminating the compressed-air stream.
The final air-quality requirement and project configuration should still be confirmed
during technical selection.

Can the NX5000 be supplied for high-pressure industrial air?

Yes, engineered NX5000 configurations can be selected for demanding pressure duties.
For example, the referenced 2026 AVISTA project was engineered around a 23 barg operating
point. The achievable pressure and flow depend on the selected aerodynamic configuration
and site conditions.

Does the NX5000 support remote monitoring?

The MXS controller supports Ethernet, RS485 and Modbus communication, and the package
can support HELIX™ IoT connectivity for remote diagnostics and monitoring where enabled
for the project.

Can AVISTA provide commissioning and service?

AVISTA can support technical selection, project coordination, installation and
commissioning support, maintenance, troubleshooting and genuine Ingersoll Rand spare
parts. Exact site-service scope is confirmed separately in the quotation.

How do I request the correct NX5000 configuration?

Provide your required flow and pressure, ambient conditions, cooling-water data,
electrical supply, site elevation and control requirements. AVISTA can then coordinate
the final compressor selection and commercial quotation.
